REFLECTIONS OF LITTLE ISLAND

Acrylic on 48X60n gallery stretched canvas

Inspired by a photo taken by Cody Chaplain, this painting depicts the Sandbridge Little Island Fishing Pier at sunrise.  The pier was completed in 2006 as a cooperative project with the City of Virginia Beach.  It is on the Atlantic Ocean side of Sandbridge, just north of the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.  Little Island District Park has other amenities for visitors such as sheltered picnic tables, grills, and a playground area.

Jeremiah 5:22

“I, the Lord, define the ocean's sandy shoreline as an everlasting boundary that the waters cannot cross. The waves may toss and roar, but they can never pass the boundaries I set.’”

THE DOLDRUMS

Watercolor on 11x14 in Aquaboard

Inspired by a sailing race I took to Cape Charles with my husband and a few of our friends, this painting captures our return trip.  We lost the wind and sat out there for hours moving very little (if at all) before they called the race.  When sailing without wind, it is sometimes called being “in the doldrums”, which actually refers to a part of the Atlantic near the equator where there is often little to no wind.

 John 3:8

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit”.

SANDPIPER DUO

Watercolor on 9x12in cold pressed watercolor paper with epoxy overlay accents

The Least Sandpiper (Calidris minutilla) is the smallest member of the sandpiper family, no bigger than a sparrow. This is the sandpiper most likely to be seen on small bodies of water inland. On sandy riverbanks little flocks of Least Sandpipers fly up to circle the area and then settle again, giving thin, reedy cries as they go. On the outer coast, outnumbered by bigger shorebirds, they seek out sheltered places on the muddy edges of the marsh.

Matthew 6:26

"Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?"

MYRTLE THE TURTLE

Watercolor on 9x12in premium cold pressed paper with epoxy accents

Sea turtles have existed on Earth and traveled our seas for the last 100 million years and are a fundamental link in marine ecosystems. However, they are currently endangered due to illegal harvesting, habitat loss, climate change, and pollution.

Sea turtles can be found in Virginia Beach from May to October, but they may stay until late fall or early winter if the water is warm.

Virginia Beach had 10 identified sea turtle nests in 2023 and is actively working to protect this species from extinction.

Genesis 1:2

“God created the sea creatures and every living creature that moves in the water. "

LITTLE DIVER

Watercolor on 9x12in cold pressed paper with epoxy overlay accents

When turtle hatchlings successfully reach the surf, they begin what is called a “swimming frenzy” which may last for several days. This gets them away from dangerous nearshore waters where predation is high.  Once in the water, their “lost years” begin and their whereabouts will be unknown for as long as a decade.

Isaiah 43:2

“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.  When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown… "

THE CAPE HENRY LIGHTHOUSES

12 X 16 in watercolor on cold pressed paper

There are two lighthouses located at Cape Henry within Fort Story military base near the northern end of Virginia Beach. The original lighthouse is the 4th oldest lighthouse in the country, dating back to 1792.  In 1881, a newer lighthouse was constructed 350 feet from the original.  While lighthouses are still utilized in many capes and inlets across the world, they have turned into somewhat of a novelty for many - a relic of days past. But, as is often true with historical structures, these lighthouses hold within them more than steel, brick and glass. Each flame that flickered through the thick windows broke through the night and signaled something different to everyone who saw it. Safe passage into harbor. A new beginning. The end of a journey. Home.

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven"

PERCHED PELICAN PAIR

Acrylic on 24 x 24in premium birch panel with epoxy accents

Brown pelicans are commonly seen in coastal Virginia.  They are a monogamous breeding pair that work together to build a nest, incubate eggs, and raise their young.  The male delivers materials to the female, who will build the nest and lay around three eggs.  Both parents take turns incubating, mostly using their feet, essentially standing on them to shelter them from cold air or hot sun.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.  If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.  But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”

THE NATIVE HERD

Watercolor on12x16in hot pressed watercolor paper with epoxy overlay accents

Legendary wild horses have roamed the Outer Banks coast for centuries. The wild horses have distinct features, as they are descendants of Spanish Mustangs originally brought over on Spanish ships in the 1500s. Outer Banks folklore is rich with theories about how the horses thrived and became a wild herd.

Proverbs 27:23-24

"Know the state of your flocks, and put your heart into caring for your herds, for riches don’t last forever…”
